The Unveiling of a Memorial
For many people the final resting place focuses a family’s grieving, and their memory of the one who has died. The memorial stone placed there may be their only tangible link with that person.
Te Hura Kohatu marks the placing of the stone, and brings the family together again to renew their bond once more. It is a symbol of a new beginning.
It normally takes place about a year after the death.
In this service the English parallels rather than translates the Māori text.
Ka āhei ma te Pirihi mā te Reimana rānei e whakahaere tēnei Karakia |
This service is normally conducted by a priest. A duly authorised layperson may take the service. |
‘There is a season for everything.’
Ecclesiastes 3:1
whakamaharatanga,
ā, ka tae atu, ka mea ia
I runga i te Ingoa
o te Atua, o te Matua, o te Tama, o te Wairua Tapu.
Āmine.
Kua hanga a muri, a mua, ōku e koe:
he taro mā mātou mō tēnei rā.
Murua ō mātou hara,
Me mātou hoki e muru nei
i ō te hunga e hara ana ki a mātou.
Āua hoki mātou e kawea kia whakawaia;
Engari whakaorangia mātou i te kino:
Nōu hoki te rangatiratanga, te kaha,
me te korōria,
Āke ake ake. Āmine.
Ngā Īnoi
Ka mea te Pirihi
E te Atua Kaha rawa,
nā tōu mana, me tōu aroha,
i whakatapua ai i tika ai ngā mea katoa;
kia aroha mai koe, ā manaakitia mātou;
te hunga e arohatia ana e mātou;
o ngā whakaatu e karapoti nei a mātou:
tukua mātou e ora nei, kia whiwhi me rātou,
Ka mutu te Īnoi Whakatapu, ka āhei me pānui ngā kupu i runga i taua Tohu
Whakamaharatanga.
Te Īnoi mō te Hunga Tapu
E te Atua kaha rawa,
i te mea e kotahi ana te hunga tapu ki a koe
i roto i te tinana tapu o te Karaiti o tō mātou Ariki,
meinga mātou kia aru i a rātou i roto i te aroha
me te piri pono kia tae rawa atu mātou
Ka āhei he hīmene i konei.
Kia noho a Ihowā ki a koutou.
Mā Ihowā koe e manaaki.
Mā te Atua o te rangimārie,
nāna nei i whakahoki mai i roto i te hunga mate
tō tātou Ariki, a Īhu Karaiti, taua Hēpara nui o ngā hipi,
he meatanga nō nga toto o te Kawenata mutungakore;
māna koutou e mea kia tino tika i runga i ngā mahi pai katoa,
i roto anō i a Īhu Karaiti;
waiho atu i a ia te korōria ake ake.
Āmine.
Haere i runga i te aroha. Haere i runga i te rangimārie.
Āmine. Ka haere mātou i runga i te Ingoa o te Karaiti.
